Final Attempt

I asked Ralph to call a meeting of our tiny group today. I need my specs back. Hopefully the older boys of our group can get them back from Jack. Samneric seem really frightened of Jack's group now though - the other boys have become complete savages! Hopefully though Samneric will be willing to go get my specs back...

The big boys of our tribe went down to Jack's end of the island to try to get my specs back from Jack. Some of the boys started throwing rocks at us and Ralph and Jack got into a huge fight over it, and over my specs of course. I try to remind Ralph that we need to just focus on getting my specs back and forget Jack for the time being.

Ralph tried really hard to get the boys to listen to him. He tried to get them to understand just how important his signal fire was, but all they did was laugh at him. And then that mean Jack told his group to grab Samneric! They didn't do anything to him, and yet he wanted them tied up just because they were still on Ralph's side! But that made Ralph really mad. Oh boy, he got so mad he started hitting Jack right in the face with his fists! I wish I could have done a thing like that when he stole my specs, but I wouldn't be able to aim my fists right without them anyway. I tried really hard to get them to stop. Held the conch up and everything so they would know it was my turn to talk. I called those boys savages. It was the best word I could think up.

And then, out of nowhere, a big rock comes flying at me.

Blinded by Jack

Ralph, Samneric, myself, and some of the littluns are the only ones left from the original group. I don't want to think about Simon. And I definitely don't want to think about the fact that Ralph and I were part of the force that.... killed.... him.

Ralph and I try to keep the fire going all day, but it's hard because there aren't as many boys to run collect fire wood for us all the time. Whenever I venture out to get some wood near Jack's camp it doesn't sound like the boys are having any fun. I feel like I heard a boy being beaten over there, but that couldn't have been possible. Maybe they were just chanting something angrily. I don't want to go back near Jack's camp any time soon though.

At night we let the fire die out. There was no way to maintain it now that there were so few of us and no one could find any sticks in the darkness. We decided to just settle down and go to sleep together with the few remainders of our group.

My specs! Oh my specs! I can't believe they're gone! Those boys. Those boys with Jack they took my specs. To light a fire. To signal to a ship so they could be rescued and not us. Oh, my specs! Oh Jack! Why did you have to take my specs?!

One of Our Own is Gone

All the older boys of our group are going to Jack now! I can't believe that they're leaving Ralph, the one who brought us all together!

Ralph suggested that we go over to Jack's group. We're so curious. And so hungry. Hungry. It's getting harder and harder to find fruits in the jungle and none of us here are capable of catching meat. Jack let us eat. His first nice gesture towards Ralph and I in a long, long time. The meat felt so good in my empty stomach.

Jack called for the boys to say which group they want to be a part of: his or Ralph's. Ralph made a good pitch, said how he was the one who found the shell and brought everyone together on the first day we were here. But the boys all turned to Jack. He's got a hold on them. I don't know how it happened, but he is like some big tribal chief man. Somehow, I don't think that we're going to get rescued any time soon with Jack in charge...

It began raining and the big fire began to dwindle and smolder out. Jack called for a big dance of the boys in honor of the rain. Ralph and I joined in. What choice have we got at this point? I did my best to dance without over-exerting myself and making my asthma flair up again.

Simon appeared out of nowhere and came right into the middle of our circle. He was muttering something I couldn't understand. And suddenly the circle around Simon began to turn and twist wildly. I don't know what happened, I tried to stay out of the whole thing. But all of the sudden, the mass of boys was on top of Simon and moving past him and over him again, constantly spinning and dancing and chanting.

The rain began to increase and the boys backed off into the shelter of the trees, leaving Simon's body in the middle of the meeting grounds. He was dead! Poor Simon! I wanted to go help him up, but no movement came from his body and I was sure he was dead. Simon! Oh Simon! Oh I can't believe that one of our own has died...

We awoke in the morning and Simon's body was gone. Maybe the beast got it. Or maybe the waves swept him away. Poor Simon.

We saw the scariest sight today though. The scariest thing in a long time. The big winds of the storm carried something large off our island. No one could tell what it was, maybe the beast, but the winds took it out to sea. All the boys ran screaming from the sight. I waddled away as quickly as I could.

Mutiny!

Ralph told me today that he thinks that even Jack would go and hide if there was a big beast on our island. I wouldn't blame him though, honestly, if he went and hid. I wouldn't want that big monster to get me either. But I guess Ralph thinks that's weak or something... Ralph's comment made Jack really angry though and he decided to storm off into the jungle. I hope they don't stay mad at each other for long (even though I don't really like Jack, I still don't want us to all be fighting.)

I told Ralph that we needed to build a signal fire on the beach. I want to be able to help keep it going, but I really can't climb up that mountain every day because of my asthma. Ralph and everyone else thought this was a good idea and went to gather wood. Maybe I'll give them a hand today.

So while we were collecting wood some of the older boys snuck away to join Jack! I can't believe they would do that! After all, Ralph was the one that brought us all together, so why would they leave him for a mean boy. Maybe they'll come back. I hope they come back. I think we should stick together. We have a better chance of survival and a better chance at getting rescued from this island if we don't get mad at each other and run away all the time! I hope the other boys come back soon...

I think I heard the squeal of a pig from somewhere on the island. I know it wasn't from nearby though. None of the hunters are left with our group.

Once we had all of our wood collected we started a fire with my specs. Even though one group has all the hunters, atleast we have my specs to start a signal fire. One group has a better chance of survival now than the other but one has a better chance of being rescued... I really wish that the other boys would come back.

Jack and his boys tried to steal our fire! Some of them snuck out of the trees and tried to grab our lit branches! And then Jack had the nerve to try to convince some of our boys to join his new tribe! I can't believe Jack would do that! He should just bring his group back and join us again. It's the best idea. We'll be safest that way.

I think Ralph is having trouble keeping control of the group. I'm worried about what is going to happen on our little island if Jack takes over...

I Wonder What's Keeping the Others...

Jack and his group left to attend the fire and I don't know where Ralph went. It's really lonely with only the littluns to converse with.

They've been gone a while and I'm starting to get worried about them. I hope they weren't wrong about the beast. I hope it didn't pop out and eat them!

Finally. Simon came back and informed me that the others were all hunting and won't be back until after dark. I'm still worried about them though. I know I wouldn't want to be out in the parts of the island we rarely go on, in the darkness, trying to hunt for pigs. It's crazy! Those boys are too darn courageous. Sometimes it's good to be a little cautious. Anyway, hopefully they will come back soon. It's boring here without the older boys and I know that I can't do anything to control the littluns if something goes wrong.

Oh dear. Where are they?!

A Man Came from the Sky...

Last night there was a big aerial battle nearby to our island. I guess they couldn't really call a truce midair to come down to investigate our fire, since it is being kept lit and watched all the time now. In the night a dead body came down on a parachute and landed on the mountain. Samneric told everyone all about it in the morning, but I knew i heard them screaming for Ralph in the night when they heard his parachute inflate in the wind. If only he had come down alive. Or better yet, with a radio that functioned... I'm sure one of us could have figured out how to use it.

Ralph called an assembly. He thinks we should explore the rest of the island to make sure there aren't any big beasts lurking in the few places that we haven't been to yet. I don't like the looks of the big rock at the far end of the island, but Ralph thinks we need to go there, so I guess I won't argue with him since he is chief. Maybe I'll stay back with the littluns, just to be safe...

Ralph decided to go by himself to the big castle-rock, with Jack going after him a few minutes later. I hope they don't find anything scary there.

Once Ralph and Jack decided that there wasn't any beast in the big rock formation at the other end of the island, all the littluns wanted to go play there. I might go with them and make sure they're careful. I don't want there to be any chance blame for one's injuries could be put on me (again.)

Ralph is always right... He realized that no one was tending the fire and sent some of Jack's boys to go back up to the mountain from the rock formation. We have to keep that fire going. It's our only chance of getting rescued any time soon since no one knows where we are.

The Fear that Lurks in the Night

Ralph called an assembly this evening. He wants us to make sure that we all work on building shelters and keeping the fire going and other important things like that. He then let the boys talk about the beast that some of us fear is coming onto the island. I don't know what it is, but it sure has some of the littluns scared to death. I did my best to help them talk at the meeting, 'cause some of them seemed to be a little embarrassed. I hope the little boys are just seeing things and there is no beast coming onto the island at night...

I decided that maybe the beast that they were imagining was just something psychological. I was just hoping to convince them that there was nothing to be afraid of, but I don't think the little boys understood what I was trying to tell them. Simon tried to tell the boys that it was just him walking about the island, but they didn't really want to believe that either. Simon then tried to tell the boys that what they saw was just a part of human nature they feared. Somehow though, what Simon said was misinterpreted as a sign of a ghost on the island. Ralph decided to see how many people feared ghosts... I don't believe in no ghosts, so I don't see what everyone is arguing about. It must just be the littluns dreaming or something. Just the shadows moving about on the trees... That's all.

Those boys! They think it's a ghost haunting our island or some nonsense. I can't believe they all think it's a ghost! Jack and Ralph got into a fight over this whole beast thing and Jack is acting crazy. He says we should all ignore the rules and do whatever we please. But this place would be a mess if we ignored the rules! And we would never ever be rescued at that rate! Jack led the boys to the beach, leaving Ralph and Simon and me on the platform. I don't know what is going on. I thought all the boys agreed that Ralph should be in charge since he first blew the conch... But now Jack is trying to take over and insult Ralph. I don't know what to do about this, but I think it's safe to side with Ralph for now...

A shrill wail came from some hidden spot nearby. We heard the mumblings of the little boy who told us about this new beast and his whimpering. I ccouldn't see him for the darkness and smudges on my specs, but I hope this will get the other boys to realize that we should stick together here until we get rescued.
